All of this has led to an unmatched breadth and maturity of services available to AWS customers.
And while Amazon won the competition, it did not rest on its laurels, regularly launching new services in the public cloud, such as the cloud-based data warehouse Redshift, the high-performance relational database service Aurora and the event based on Lambda serverless computing platform, after developing the latest service for its AI-based virtual assistant, Alexa.
"Yes, Google Cloud and Microsoft have 'closed the gap', but AWS is still more capable in the range of offerings and the maturity of these individual services," says Anderson, from Gartner.
“I would say that when it comes to market perception, most customers feel that Azure and AWS are effectively at the same level and Google a little behind. In terms of pure capacity, however, AWS is a more mature architecture and feature set, and the breadth is broader. ”
At the AWS re: Invent conference in December 2019, AWS said it had 175 services, with a variety of options and flavors in computing, storage, database, analytics, networking, mobile devices, developer tools, management tools , IoT, security and Enterprise applications.
“Undoubtedly, the market leader, AWS generally wins out in developer functionality due to the breadth of its services as a result of its pioneering advantage,” says Nick McQuire, Vice President of Corporate Research at CCS Insight . "AWS has also done a good job of translating its scale into economic benefits for customers, although there are times when the cloud can be prohibitively expensive."
This broad set of features can also be seen as negative for some, with the service catalog representing a dizzying maze of services and options, but this level of choice has also proved to be a great resource for engineers.
Bartoletti, from Forrester, who called AWS “storing everything” in the cloud for enterprise developers, points to a fundamental difference in approach.
"AWS can have three to four different database services, and they don't care which one you use as long as you use it on Amazon," he notes. “Traditionally, suppliers would have to choose one and run it. This makes it difficult to compete with AWS ”.
